Israel's Defence Minister orders military to plan for Palestinians to leave Gaza; inside Israel, most political leaders supported Trump’s idea
Udaipur, February 8, 2025 - Israel’s Defence Minister has asked the military to prepare plans for Palestinians in Gaza who want to leave. This comes after President Donald Trump suggested that the U.S. should take over Gaza and move its people to other countries.
A Hamas official strongly opposed this idea, calling it a plan to take control of Gaza. Egypt, which Trump mentioned as a possible place for Palestinians to move, has firmly rejected the idea. Egyptian officials warned that forcing Palestinians to leave Gaza could harm its peace deal with Israel.
Inside Israel, most political leaders supported Trump’s idea. A recent poll showed that 80% of Jewish Israelis agree with moving Palestinians out of Gaza, although only half think it can actually happen. However, some left-wing politicians, activists, and families of hostages have criticized the plan. A journalist from the Israeli newspaper Haaretz warned that forcing people to leave based on their ethnicity is wrong, especially for Jews who remember the Holocaust.
Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said Palestinians should have the right to leave Gaza. However, no country has agreed to accept them, and Israel has heavily restricted travel in and out of Gaza for years.
Meanwhile, Trump’s plan to turn Gaza into a luxury destination like the "Riviera of the Middle East" has faced global criticism. The UN Secretary-General warned against any forced displacement, as it would be illegal under international law. Despite this, Trump insisted that Palestinians would be moved to better homes in other places and that no U.S. soldiers would be needed in Gaza.
