Jaishankar Hails Diplomacy with Iran to Secure Passage for Indian Ships
India used diplomacy with Iran to secure safe passage for Indian LPG tankers through the Strait of Hormuz; EAM S Jaishankar confirms talks with Iran helped ease shipping concerns for India amid the Middle East crisis
March 16, 2026 - India is using diplomacy with Iran to ensure safe passage for Indian ships, protect energy supplies and maintain regional stability while the Middle East crisis continues. The latest developments involve India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar holding multiple talks with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi amid rising tensions in West Asia and concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Jaishankar said India’s direct diplomacy with Iran helped reopen the Strait of Hormuz for Indian ships saying it showed what diplomacy could achieve. Speaking to Financial Times, Jaishankar said “My talking has yielded some results” and added that direct talks with Tehran allowed two Indian-flagged gas tankers to pass through the Strait on Saturday.
After discussions, two Indian-flagged LPG tankers were allowed to pass safely through the strait, easing concerns over India’s energy supplies.
Jaishankar and Araghchi have spoken several times in recent days to discuss the Middle East crisis and maritime security. Reports say at least three to four conversations have taken place since tensions escalated.
Jaishankar clarified that India did not give anything in exchange for the safe passage of ships nor is there any “blanket arrangement” with Iran to allow all Indian-flagged ships to pass through. He said the cooperation was possible because India and Iran have long-standing diplomatic relations.
