Japan Election: PM Takaichi's Party Secures Historic Landslide
Japan’s ruling LDP wins over two-thirds majority in the Lower House after the 2026 snap election called by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, boosting market confidence
Feb 9, 2026 - Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has achieved a historic landslide victory in the snap general election held on Sunday (February 8, 2026). The election was called by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s first female PM, only a few months after she took office in October 2025.
The LDP won more than two-thirds of seats in the Lower House. The results early on Monday (February 9) showed that the party had alone won 316 seats of the 465 seats, surpassing the majority mark of 261 seats. With this majority, the LDP and its new coalition partner - the Japan Innovation Party (Ishin) - now has strong legislative power, including the ability to override resistance on key bills in the Upper House where it lacks a majority. The Japan Innovation Party has won 36 seats.
Financial markets reacted positively to the clarity and stability the election provided, with Tokyo stock indexes surging to record highs. World leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump congratulated Takaichi on her victory.
Takaichi dissolved the Lower House of Parliament for a snap election to secure a clear mandate to enact her policies, especially amid economic challenges and geopolitical tensions. Before the elections, LDP had held 198 seats.
