Justice Surya Kant Sworn in as 53rd Chief Justice of India
Justice Surya Kant takes oath as India’s 53rd Chief Justice on November 24, 2025, succeeding Justice BR Gavai; his tenure will run until February 9, 2027
Nov 24, 2025 – Justice Surya Kant takes oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI), taking over from Justice BR Gavai. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu on Monday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
CJI Kant will hold this office for nearly 15 months until February 9, 2027, when he turns 65 years of age, which is the retirement age for any CJI.
Present on the occasion were the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and several others. Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was conspicuous by his absence from the swearing-in ceremony.
