Cash-at-Home Case: Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns Amid Impeachment Probe
Justice Yashwant Varma resigns from Allahabad High Court amid the cash-at-home controversy, halting impeachment proceedings. Full details here
Udaipur, April 10, 2026 - Justice Yashwant Varma, involved in the cash-at-home case, has submitted his resignation stepping down as a judge of the Allahabad High Court. His resignation dated April 9, 2026, has come in the middle of the impeachment probe. It was addressed to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and took immediate effect and a copy of the letter has been sent to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant.
The resignation comes amid a major controversy involving the alleged discovery of large amounts of cash at Justice Varma's official residence after a fire in March 2025. It is one of the rare instances of a sitting High Court judge resigning amid impeachment proceedings and has come on the day the judge was to begin arguments in his defence in front of the inquiry committee.
In his resignation letter, Justice Varma has written that he was resigning “with deep anguish” but did not detail the reasons saying he did not want to burden the august office of the President with them.
A Lok Sabha three-member inquiry committee had already been formed by Speaker Om Birla last year after an impeachment motion backed by many Lok Sabha MPs. An in-house inquiry by the Supreme Court had not found his explanation satisfactory. The then CJI Sanjiv Khanna had recommended action to the Executive.
Justice Varma was earlier a judge of the Delhi High Court and was transferred to Allahabad High Court in 2025 after the controversy surfaced. He has denied all allegations, claiming the cash, found in the outhouse of his official residence, did not belong to him or his family. At that time, Justice Varma was serving as a judge at the Delhi High Court.
His resignation is significant because it effectively halts the impeachment process in Parliament under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, according to sources. He may still retain post-retirement benefits, which could have been lost if formally removed.
