January 7, 2025 - Justin Trudeau has stepped down from his post as Canadian Prime Minister. He made this announcement yesterday, January 6, after months of political turmoil which included the exit of his Finance Minister as well as disappointing pre-election numbers. Trudeau has also stepped down as leader of the Liberal Party but will continue in both these posts until a new Liberal leader is elected.

“It is time for a reset”, said Trudeau after resigning pointing to the “internal battles” which has led him to believe that  he “cannot be the best option” for the Canada polls ahead. "I truly feel that removing the contention around my own continued leadership is an opportunity to bring the temperature down”, he added.

Parliament which was to resume on January 27 now remains suspended until March 24. Once it reconvenes it will remain to be seen whether the Opposition, comprising of the Conservatives and the New Democratic Party, will vote out the Liberals through a no-confidence motion.

The Liberal Party has already initiated the process of electing a new leader who would lead them into the elections which has to be held by late October 2025.

The past few months, Trudeau’s government has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. One of which was the PM’s controversial allegations against India alluding criminal activities in Canada with reference to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in the country.
