March 30, 2026 - Amid the ongoing LPG crisis triggered by the US-Iran conflict, the Central Government has taken a major step to provide kerosene in kerosene-free States finding it an easy additional source for fuel for cooking purposes. Under this initiative, kerosene will be distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS) in 21 States and Union Territories, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana.

The Ministry of Petroleum issued a notification on Sunday (March 29) permitting temporary supply of kerosene under the PDS. Effective March 29, the government will supply cooking/lighting fuel for 60 days or until further orders.

According to the new arrangement, a maximum of two designated petrol pumps of government oil companies will be allowed to store up to 5,000 litres of kerosene. Kerosene will be provided upon showing a ration card, and a ration dealer will be present at the distribution point. The quantity of kerosene per ration card will be decided by the respective State Governments.

Proper records of storage and distribution must be maintained for inspection purposes and with strict compliance requirements. Adherence to safety guidelines issued by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation is mandatory.
