Centre Suggests Measures to Ensure Medics Safety After Kolkata Tragedy

In response to the tragic incident involving the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the central government has advised states to take immediate steps to improve the safety of medical professionals at their workplaces. The recommendations include enhanced night patrolling on hospital premises and stricter control of access to key areas within hospitals.

President Droupadi Murmu Condemns Crime

Reacting to the shocking event, President Droupadi Murmu expressed her deep distress and horror. She called on the nation to recognize and address the growing threat of crimes against women, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

CBI Investigates Possible Police Involvement

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is intensifying its investigation into the case. On Wednesday, August 28,2024 the agency began conducting a polygraph test on Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Anup Dutta of Kolkata Police. Dutta is suspected of having connections with Sanjay Roy, who has been arrested in connection with the case. The CBI is trying to determine whether Roy informed Dutta about the crime and whether Dutta provided any assistance in covering it up. Dutta is the eighth individual to undergo such a test in this ongoing investigation.

Political Repercussions and Protests

The incident has sparked significant political unrest. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a 12-hour bandh (shutdown) in protest against alleged police violence during their 'Nabanna Abhijan' agitation. In contrast, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has criticized the bandh, claiming it is an attempt to damage Bengal's image and disrupt the investigation. The TMC held a protest in response, dedicating the day to seeking justice for the deceased doctor.

Unrest in Kolkata

Protests erupted in Kolkata over the incident, with police using tear gas, water cannons, and batons to disperse demonstrators. University students led the protests, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her handling of the case. Despite the protests, Banerjee announced plans to amend state laws to enforce the death penalty for those convicted of rape.

Rising Sexual Violence in India

Despite the introduction of harsher laws and fast-track courts following the infamous 2012 Delhi gang rape case, the problem persists. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, there were 31,516 reported cases of rape in 2022, a 20% increase from the previous year.

The situation remains tense as investigations continue and the public demands swift justice for the victim.
