Feb 27, 2026 - Kolkata was jolted by strong tremors on Friday (February 27) afternoon leading to panic and evacuation of buildings. The tremors, at around 1.22 pm, lasted a few seconds and there are no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.
The significant tremors were reported in the West Bengal capital and its adjoining districts after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake rocked neighbouring Bangladesh. The quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometres with its epicentre located at Nayabazar, around 100 kms from Kolkata, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Kolkata residents reported swaying furniture and ceiling fans prompting them to rush out of offices and homes in fear of aftershocks.
