Kulpati Now Kulguru

Udaipur, March 22, 2025 - The Rajasthan State Assembly passed the Rajasthan Universities Laws The Rajasthan State Assembly passed the Rajasthan Universities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on March 20, 2025. The bill changes the Hindi title of Vice-Chancellors (VCs) in state universities from 'Kulpati' to 'Kulguru'. Similarly, the title 'Pratikulpati' will now be 'Pratikulguru'. However, the English designations will remain the same.

Opposition Questions the Need for Change

Opposition MLAs opposed the bill, saying the government should focus on improving universities instead of changing titles. Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully pointed out that out of 32 state universities, only four have VCs from Rajasthan, while most are from Uttar Pradesh.

MLAs also raised concerns that using 'Kulguru' on degrees could create problems for students applying to foreign universities or other Indian universities.

Criticism Over Traditional References

Deputy Leader of Opposition Ramkesh Meena criticized the name change, saying 'Kulguru' reminds people of ancient gurukuls, where only elite classes had access to education. He questioned whether Rajasthan was moving back to old Vedic traditions.

Allegations of Corruption in VC Appointments

Independent MLA Ravindra Singh Bhati alleged that VCs are appointed through bribes and later try to recover the money during their tenure.
