Udaipur, January 25, 2025 - Rajasthan’s plan to create its sixth tiger reserve in Kumbhalgarh is facing delays. Experts believe the slow progress might be due to a lack of political interest. The project was started as a key initiative by Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, who is also a former MP from Rajsamand.
What is the Current Status?
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) approved the project, and a 10-member expert committee suggested an area of around 1,397 square kilometers for the reserve. This area would cover five districts. Despite this, the project has slowed down.
What are the Issues?
What Does the Report Say?
The report, submitted on October 30, 2024, divided the area into:
Core zone (main tiger habitat).
Buffer zone (surrounding area to support wildlife).
It also mentions the presence of over 15,000 wild animals in the forest, including:
8,690 herbivores (plant-eating animals).
Specific counts like 521 sambars, 26 cheetals, 1 chinkara, 84 chausinghas, and 5,806 langurs.
Authorities are working to address these challenges, including resident concerns and objections by officials. The project’s future depends on how quickly these issues are resolved.
