Pichola Lake Experiences First Inflow Since June

Udaipur still facing rainfall shortage...

Lake Pichola

For the first time since June 25, Pichola Lake received 1 inch of water after a significant rainfall the day before. Following a heavy rain alert, the third Monday of the monsoon season passed with minimal precipitation. This is the first time water has flowed into Pichola Lake in 66 days. The Water Resources Department reported 19 mm of rain in the city from Sunday, July 4 evening to Monday, July 5 morning.

In contrast, last year, the lake overflowed just 11 days after the monsoon began. Currently, Pichola Lake, which has an 11-feet capacity, stands at 5.3 feet. The Sisarma River, which feeds the lake, is flowing at 1.5 feet, while the Nandeshwar Channel has a flow of 3 inches. Heavy rainfall in the catchment area could increase the inflow into Pichola Lake and subsequently into Fateh Sagar Lake.

Udaipur Lake's water level has risen by 3 inches to 18.6 feet. Meanwhile, the Madri Dam has increased by 1.6 feet, Govardhan Sagar by 4 inches, and Vallabhnagar Dam by 4 inches.

Udaipur district is still 7.67% below average rainfall, with 326 mm recorded against the expected 353 mm by August 5, 2024. Last year, 445.46 mm of rain was recorded during the same period. Rainfall details are as follows: Vallabhnagar received 80 mm, Bagolya (Mavli) 72 mm, Devas 24 mm, Gogunda 29 mm, Jhadol 26 mm, Kotda 10 mm, Ogna 50 mm, Swaroopsagar 15 mm, Sei Dam 31 mm, and Udaipur Lake 17 mm.

Inflow into Pichola Lake began on August 4 for the first time since 2022. The water level increased from 6.6 feet to 6.8 feet. Last year’s overflow on July 6 was due to a cyclonic storm. Fateh Sagar Lake is also awaiting an increase in water levels, which will be influenced by inflow from the Madar Pond.
