Dec 19, 2025 - Violence has erupted in Bangladesh yet again after critically-injured Bangla student leader Sharif Osman Hadi died while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Hadi, who spearheaded the July 2024 pro-democracy uprising in the country, was shot by masked gunmen last week while campaigning in Dhaka for the national elections.

The student leader was shifted by Bangladesh government to Singapore in an air ambulance after his condition was stated to be critical.

Chief Advisor of the interim government in the country, Muhammad Yunus has promised to find the assailants. He announced Hadi’s demise saying, “Today, I came before you with very heartbreaking news. Sharif Osman Hadi, the fearless frontline fighter of the July Uprising and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, is no more among us”.

Protests erupted late Thursday (December 18) night as soon as news of Hadi’s death spread with thousands taking to the street and vandalising office buildings. Mob violence was reported in a number of cities across the country.
