Fresh leopard sightings and attacks stir up concern in areas as far as Bawkhada
While the man-eater leopard, which has created an atmosphere of terror in Gogunda and nearby Udaipur areas, remains elusive, fresh leopard sightings in areas as far as 40 kms from Udaipur have been reported, causing new concerns.
Leopard movement was spotted in Panchawaton Ki Bhagal, located in Bhootala which is near Iswal and only 10 kilometers from the city. Villager Bheru Singh Chandana reported that his bullock was attacked by a leopard but it fled the scene when another villager noticed it and started shouting. As soon as the news spread, former sarpanch Narayan Singh Chadana and several villagers gathered at the spot. Forest ranger Lal Singh also arrived and inspected the area.
Meanwhile, leopard sightings were also reported in Mordi, Bawkhada and Dhol in the Sayra range. In Bawkhada panchayat a leopard attacked two goats seriously injuring one while the other’s mutilated body was found at a distance.
Since the distance between Gogunda and Bawkhada is about 40 kilometers, it is unlikely that this could be the man-eater from Gogunda. It is being speculated that a leopard from the nearby Kumbalgarh sanctuary may have ventured into this area.
Dhol sarpanch Mohan Lal Gameti reported that in Waton Ka Guda, a leopard attacked villager Chapli Bai. The animal’s claw got entangled in the woman's scarf and she somehow managed to escape safely. In the nearby Ghata Ki Bhagal forest, a leopard attacked a bullock that was out to graze.
