Liquor smuggling increases in festive season

It is festive season and there has been an increase in liquor being smuggled to Gujarat. Since Gujarat is a dry state, smugglers have adopted new ways of smuggling liquor into this state to avoid being caught.

The smugglers in Udaipur and the border lying areas of Dungarpur have adopted new ways of hauling liquor in Gujarat state. As per reports, youths falling in the age group of 16 to 20 are given 10 percent commission for smuggling purposes. These youths carry bags in their hands in the most unsuspecting manner and travel to Gujarat in buses and other passenger vehicles to supply expensive brands in Gujarat state. It may be noted that liquor demand increases in Gujarat in festive season of Navratri and Diwali. Trucks loaded with expensive English wine have already reached the villages touching Gujarat border. When these smugglers get information of police raids, they hide the liquor at spots which are not traceable. Liquor is also being smuggled in private luxury vehicles and police keeps an eye on these vehicles. Recently police had seized liquor worth lakhs of rupees in Sukher area in a vehicle registered in Gujarat.

Police has also said that it is not possible for them to check just every truck on the highway unless some hint is given by their informers. Mostly liquor is hidden under other goods or crop husk. The smugglers after delivering liquor in the bordering villages pay a handsome amount to the drivers who cross the “danger zone” which is 40 thousand to 50 thousand rupees. They cross the border once in 2 to 3 days and deliver liquor to Gujarat.
