December 2,2024 - The excise department is considering a proposal to extend the operating hours of liquor stores. Currently, liquor shops close at 8:00 pm, but the new plan may allow them to stay open until 10:00 pm, starting next year.
Long-Standing Demand for Extended Hours
Liquor shop owners have long requested longer hours for selling alcohol. This issue was discussed during a recent meeting between liquor traders and government officials, including the excise and finance departments.
“In Rajasthan’s neighbouring states, the closing time is 10:00 pm. Rajasthan should also consider this in the new policy. After the shops close at 8:00 pm, liquor keeps being sold illegally by many vendors. Those who are following the rules face losses.” - Raj Liquor Welfare Society President Nilesh Mewara.
Key Demands from Liquor Traders
Early Alcohol Supply: Liquor shop owners want their alcohol supply to be arranged by April to avoid any problems at the beginning of the financial year.
Steady Supply of Liquor: Ensuring a constant supply of alcohol throughout the year is another key demand.
License Renewal: There is a proposal to renew licenses for existing liquor shops to ensure their continued operation.
Higher Profit Margins: Liquor traders want a higher profit margin, aiming for at least 25% on all liquor categories, including whiskey, beer, and country liquor.
Reducing Liquor Shops in Urban Areas: Some stakeholders have suggested reducing the number of liquor shops in urban areas to address public concerns.
Excise Fee and Duty Adjustments: There’s also a proposal to add more excise duty on beer and combine excise fees into one payment.
Liquor traders are pushing for extended selling hours, increased profits, stable alcohol supply, and some changes to the excise system. The proposal is still under review, and further discussions are expected.
