March 9, 2026 –The Budget Parliament session resumes today March 9 and is expected to witness stormy discussions and fiery debates as Lok Sabha will vote on the Opposition’s motion to remove Speaker Om Birla.

Birla, a three-time MP from Kota-Bundi seat, had come under fire during the first Budget session of the Parliament after Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak in the House during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address. The Congress leader had sought to speak on excerpts from the unpublished memoir of retired Amy Chief of Staff General MM Naravane on the 2020 India-China standoff.

After days of disruption of proceedings in the Parliament, the Opposition parties had on February 10 moved a no-confidence motion aganst Speaker Birla. A formal notice was submitted by Opposition members signalling intent to proceed with the motion.

The no-confidence motion is expected to be the first item on the agenda for debate today. The Speaker will not be presiding over the proceedings.

The government is also expected to brief both the Houses on the escalating Middle East conflict, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delivering a statement on Monday.
