In a significant move on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a reduction of Rs 100 per cylinder in cooking gas prices. This announcement, just days before the anticipated 2024 Lok Sabha polls, is poised to bring relief to approximately 33 crore households reliant on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking purposes.

The price slash, effective immediately, is expected to particularly aid over Rs 10 crore economically disadvantaged households enrolled in the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). For these households, the reduction adds to the existing subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder, thereby easing their financial burden further.

Following the Prime Minister’s declaration, public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs)—namely, Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation—have swiftly moved to implement the reduced prices.
