LPG Tankers Shivalik & Nanda Devi Reach India, Easing LPG Crisis
India gets major LPG relief as tankers Shivalik and Nanda Devi arrive via the Strait of Hormuz amid Middle East tensions; supply boost expected nationwide
March 17, 2026 - The much-awaited arrival of LPG tankers Shivalik and Nanda Devi to Indian ports is expected to bring big energy relief to the LPG situation back home. The India-flagged LPG tanker Shivalik reached Mundra Port (Gujarat) on Monday (March 16) carrying about 46,000 metric tonnes of LPG after a nine-day journey from Qatar including the passage through the conflicted Strait of Hormuz. The second LPG tanker Nanda Devi has now arrived at Vadinar (Jamnagar) port carrying more than 46,000 metric tonnes LPG for ship-to-ship transfer at the anchorage. STS transfer to MT BW Birch will commence today.
Another Indian tanker Jag Laadki has already left the UAE’s Fujairah port and is slated to reach Mundra Port on Tuesday afternoon. It is said to be carrying around 81,000 tonnes of Murban crude oil produced by the UAE.
The safe arrivals of these tankers with the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) through the sensitive maritime route of the Strait of Hormuz will alleviate LPG shortage concerns to some extent. Several ships have been stuck or delayed because of the ongoing Middle East war, causing shortages and reduced consumption in recent weeks. There are currently 22 Indian-flagged vessels remaining in the Persian Gulf, carrying a total of 611 seafarers.
Iran allowed these Indian tankers to pass, despite regional conflict and partial blockade, following diplomatic talks between India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi.
The LPG crisis in India had caused the government to invoke emergency powers, order refineries to maximise LPG production and prioritise domestic supply.
Even as the world grapples with energy shortage because of the disrupted shipping through the Strait, Sri Lanka has pushed for several measures to deal with potential shortages a key among which is declaring a holiday on Wednesdays. The government has announced that every Wednesday will be observed as a public holiday to conserve fuel.
