Udaipur, November 12 - The mortal remains of Mahendra Singh Mewar, a member of the royal family and former MP, were immersed in the elements. The final rites were performed yesterday at 4:00 pm at Ayad Mahasatiyaji. His son, Nathdwara MLA Vishvaraj Singh Mewar, and grandson Devjaditya Singh lit the funeral pyre at the family's cremation grounds.
Mahendra Singh Mewar passed away at the age of 84 late on November 10. He was under treatment at Ananta Hospital in Udaipur. He was the father of Nathdwara MLA Vishvaraj Singh and father-in-law of Rajsamand MP Mahima Kumar.
The late Mahendra Singh Mewar’s final journey was given a respectful and emotional farewell. The final procession commenced as a Dol Yatra at 11am from Samor Bagh Palace. Vishvraj Singh Mewar and grandson Devjaditya Singh accompanied the Dol Yatra.
A large crowd accompanied the body on to its last journey. The procession began at the scheduled time with grandeur, moving through Jagdish Chowk, Ghantaghar, Bada Bazaar, Bhadhbhuja Ghaati, Delhi Gate, Ashok Nagar finally reaching Mahasatiya via Ayad after more than four hours. Crowds lined the route of the procession. All shops were shut closed during this period as a mark of respect. At the Mahasatiyaji site, the final rites were performed with traditional Mewari respect.
Earlier, the late Mahendra Singh Mewar’s body was kept for public viewing at Samor Bagh yesterday morning at 8:00 am. By around 11:00 am, hundreds of people had paid their respects with floral tributes. Even tourists in the city, on hearing of the demise of the royal family member, came to the venue to offer floral tributes.
Emotional tributes poured in from all over. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, BJP State president Madan Rathod, former State president Satish Poonia, CP Joshi and many other government representatives arrived to pay their tributes. The Chief Minister met MLA Vishvaraj Singh, MP Mahima Kumari and other family members of the departed soul to offer his condolences.
On hearing the news of his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences. on November 10 He wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mahendra Singh Mewar, a former Member of Parliament from Chittorgarh and a member of the Mewar royal family, who made invaluable contributions to social and political life. He dedicated himself completely to the service of the people. His efforts towards social welfare will always remain an inspiration. In this time of grief, I express my condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti!” he added.
