Migratory birds fly a distance of 4,000 to 5,000 kms over the Himalayas to reservoirs in Mewar region
Udaipur, October 9, 2024 - With a good monsoon and rainfall lasting longer than usual, rivers and lakes in the Mewar region are brimming with water and attracting all kinds of birds, especially migratory birds. This is particularly true of Menar village which is around 52 kms from Udaipur city. This area is also popularly referred to as the Bird Village or Birds Paradise because of the number of migratory birds that come there as winter approaches.
Migratory birds travel thousands of kilometres from colder countries leaving their native homes once it starts to snow there. They fly over the Himalayas, covering a distance of 4,000 to 5,000 kilometres, to warmer climes seeking food and shelter. Some reservoirs in the region have already started to witness the presence of these migratory birds. More will fly down here as it gets colder.
Menar Lake in the village is home to many such migratory birds, especially its Dhandh Talab and Brahma Sagar which are currently overflowing. The rural reservoirs, far from the sound of urban life, offer a peaceful environment for these birds and amidst the natural greenery, these birds find a perfect habitat.
Bird watchers and nature enthusiasts flock to Menar during this season (starting from October till April), to catch a glimpse of these birds. Visitors include Greater Flamingo, White-Tailed Lapwing, Pelican, Marsh Harrier, Black Kite, Green Sandpiper, Wood sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, Red-wattled Lapwing, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Common Crane, Bar Headed Goose and more. With reportedly 250 types of birds, of which 100 are migratory, watchers are in for a treat.
