Menstrual Leave for Women Employees

Udaipur, March 7, 2025 - Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has introduced a one-day menstrual leave policy for women employees in its core engineering and construction divisions. This announcement was made by L&T Chairman and Managing Director SN Subrahmanyan during Women’s Day celebrations at the company’s Powai office in Mumbai.

This policy is expected to benefit around 5,000 women employees. Women constitute 9% of L&T’s total workforce of 60,000. However, this leave is not extended to L&T’s financial and technology subsidiaries, which already offer work-from-home options.

India does not have national legislation on menstrual leave, but some states and companies have introduced similar policies. Odisha became the first state in August 2024 to implement a one-day menstrual leave for both government and private-sector employees. Karnataka is considering a bill proposing six days of paid menstrual leave annually, along with free menstrual health products.

Several private companies have already introduced menstrual leave policies. Zomato has offered ten days of paid menstrual leave per year since 2020. Swiggy also follows a similar policy, according to The Economic Times
