Udaipur, Mar 09, 2026: Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country's Supreme leader, after the demise of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a strike by Israel. The country' Assembly of Experts, which includes the Chief Jurist and President of Iran, have confirmed this appointment, 9 days after the first strike by Israel killed the Ayatollah and dragged Iran and the Middle East into an unwarranted war.

The cleric body, in its statement, said that there was no hesitation in choosing Mojtaba as their new leader, "despite the brutal aggression of the criminal America and the evil Zionist regime". It added that the 56 year old leader becomes the third leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran, based on the votes of the Assembly of Experts.

Mojtaba Khamanei was born in 1969 in Mashhad, which is a religious city in north eastern Iran and pursued his religious studies in the seminaries of Qom. Qom is an important centre in Iran for the Shia'a school of thought in Islam. He studied Islamic jurisprudence and theology, in order to pursue a career in the clerical establishment. He is known to be a strategist and political thinker working from the background, rather than a public religious scholar or political thinker, as per reports.

Iran's new Supreme leader is a mid-ranking cleric and holds close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards of Iran, and has long been viewed as a potential successor to the Ayatollah. The IRGC has vowed allegiance to the new leader and Mojtaba, who has been a significant influence from the background and now becomes the controlling authority of the country's intelligence, judiciary and armed forces along with all decision making shaping the domestic and international affairs of Iran. He also holds the ultimate power in appointing the head of media. This appointment, though marks a shift from the original purpose of the 1979 revolution, which sought to eliminate the dynastic system.
