MP Garasiya Raises Oil & Gas Supply Issue in Parliament; Govt Assures Energy Security
Union Minister Suresh Gopi informs Rajya Sabha that India will drive over 40% of global oil demand growth by 2035; Government expanding strategic petroleum reserves and diversifying imports
Udaipur, March 10, 2026 – Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi has said that the Government of India has taken several steps to reduce risks of oil & gas supply disruptions during geopolitical uncertainties and to maintain uninterrupted energy supply chains.
The Minister provided this information in the Rajya Sabha while responding to a question raised by Member of Parliament Chunnilal Garasiya who sought information on oil & gas supply. Minister Gopi said the government was taking steps to ensure uninterrupted supply
Garasiya had asked the ministry about the projected demand for crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products in India over the next 10–15 years considering the expected rise in the country's overall energy consumption. He also sought details on measures being taken to strengthen long-term hydrocarbon supply security, including diversification of import sources, expansion of strategic petroleum reserves and encouragement of domestic exploration and production.
Responding to the query, the Minister said the government is diversifying crude oil import sources, avoiding conflict-prone regions and strengthening diplomatic relations with major oil-producing countries and international organisations such as the International Energy Agency, Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the International Energy Forum.
He further said that owing to India’s strong economic growth, the country is expected to remain a major driver of global energy demand growth until 2035. According to the International Energy Agency, India will contribute more than 40% of the global growth in oil demand and about 8% of the growth in natural gas demand between 2024 and 2035.
Meanwhile, OPEC estimates India’s share in global oil demand growth at about 23% and gas demand growth at around 10% during the same period.
The government has established Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) facilities with a total capacity of 5.3 million metric tonnes (MMT) through a special purpose company called Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited. These reserves act as a buffer during short-term supply disruptions.
To further expand storage capacity, the government has approved two additional facilities with a combined storage capacity of 6.5 MMT in July 2021 under a Public-Private Partnership model. Of this, 4 MMT will be developed in Chandikhol, Odisha and 2.5 MMT in Padur, Karnataka.
