A powerful quake of intensity 7.1 on the Richter scale strikes Tibet; more than 50 people killed; Delhi-NCR, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam shaken by tremors
January 7, 2025 – An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale shook Tibet this morning killing around 53 people and injuring more than 60. The quake occurred at 6:35 am (IST) near the Nepal-Tibet border leading to tremors being felt in Bihar and Delhi-NCR.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported six earthquakes in one hour of which one was the powerful one measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale which struck Xizang, near the Nepal-Tibet border. Two aftershocks of 4.7 and 4.9 intensity were reported from the same Xizang area. Chinese officials recorded the magnitude at 6.8 in Shigatse city, Tibet's second-largest city.
According to the NCS, the epicenter of the quake was located at Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), near Nepal at latitude 28.86 degrees North and longitude 87.51 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometers. This is around 93 km northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border.
Tremors were felt in India, too, in various parts of north India including Patna, West Bengal and Assam. No damage to property has been reported in India. However, many buildings collapsed in the Tibetan region.
"Dingri county and its surrounding areas experienced very strong tremors, and many buildings near the epicentre have collapsed," according to the Chinese State broadcaster CCTV.
