Who is Roshan Suvarna? Mumbai local train murder accused arrested after 15-hour manhunt
Roshan Suvarna, the man accused of fatally stabbing commuter Mayank Lohar inside a Mumbai local train, was arrested from Panvel after a 15-hour manhunt. Police tracked him using CCTV footage, employer details and mobile surveillance.
June 25, 2026: Nearly 15 hours after a 22-year-old commuter was allegedly stabbed to death inside a moving Mumbai local train, police arrested the accused following a massive manhunt across the suburban railway network.
The accused, identified as Roshan Ramesh Suvarna (30), was detained at Panvel railway station on Wednesday afternoon after investigators tracked his movements using CCTV footage and technical surveillance.
According to police, Suvarna is a resident of Mira Road and worked at a cargo handling company near Andheri Airport along with his father and elder brother. Officials said he had no prior criminal record.
During interrogation, Suvarna allegedly told police that he had completed his work shift on Tuesday evening and later consumed nearly an entire bottle of rum. He initially planned to return home by cab from Andheri East, but due to heavy rain and the lack of available taxis, he decided to board a local train from Andheri station instead.
Police said the fatal altercation took place inside the first-class compartment of a Churchgate–Nalasopara fast local train. The argument reportedly broke out between Suvarna and 22-year-old Mayank Lohar over whether the train door should be kept open during the rain. During the dispute, Suvarna allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Lohar in the stomach before fleeing at Borivali station.
How police tracked Roshan Suvarna after the attack
After the stabbing, Suvarna allegedly jumped off the train near Platform No. 6 at Borivali station and disappeared into the crowd. With no immediate clue about the suspect’s identity, the Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP) launched a large-scale search operation.
Investigators scanned footage from nearly 400 CCTV cameras installed across stations and nearby areas between Churchgate and Nalasopara. The breakthrough came when police found clear footage of the suspect wearing a T-shirt carrying the logo of his employer.
Police then visited the cargo handling company, confirmed his identity, and collected details about his address, family members, and mobile phone number. Using mobile location tracking and technical surveillance, officers traced his movements after he fled Borivali.
During the investigation, police also learnt that Suvarna had booked a bus ticket to his native place, Mangaluru, and was planning to leave around 3 pm. Before he could escape, a police team reached Panvel railway station and found him sitting there at around 2 pm. He was detained and later taken to the Borivali GRP, where he was formally arrested on charges of murder.

Police officials said Suvarna repeatedly asked about the victim’s condition after he was detained. Officers initially told him that the victim was still undergoing treatment. However, he later searched online and came across reports confirming that Lohar had died.
In the latest development, the Borivali Court has remanded Suvarna to police custody till June 30. The railway police had sought seven days of custody, but the court granted five days. Police told the court that the accused attacked the victim with the intention to kill.
Meanwhile, the accused’s lawyer, Surendra Landge, argued that other passengers had first assaulted Suvarna, following which he pulled out the knife.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over passenger safety on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, especially during peak travel hours and adverse weather conditions.
