April 12, 2025 – Mumbai 2008 terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana, who was extradited from the US and is currently in 18-days National Investigation Agency (NIA) custody, has been kept on “suicide watch” in a high-security cell at the NIA headquarters. He will be under constant human and CCTV surveillance.

According to a source, "Rana has been kept in a 14x14 cell on the ground floor. He will be allowed only a soft-tip pen to write so that he can’t harm himself.”

NIA chief Sadanand Date has permitted only a few selected officers to be allowed inside Rana’s cell.

“Rana will remain in NIA custody for 18 days, during which time the agency will question him in detail in order to unravel the complete conspiracy behind the deadly 2008 attacks, in which 166 people were killed and over 238 injured,” the NIA said.

According to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the NIA and the Ministry of Home Affairs will conduct the probe with assistance from Mumbai police.

Some senior officials have been quoted in media reports as saying that the NIA is expected to confront Rana with a “protected witness” who helped David Coleman Headley back in 2008, arranging for his logistics and accommodation.

Headley, alias Daood Gilani, is Rana’s childhood friend and a co-conspirator in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack and is currently lodged in a US prison.

"During this visit, Headley was received by an individual close to Rana, who is a protected witness now. This person received a call from Rana after which this person arranged accommodations and other logistics for Headley," the source said.
