NAAC to introduce new online grading system by February; moves to online evaluations

Udaipur, February 11, 2025 - The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which assesses colleges and universities in India, has decided to stop physical inspections. The evaluation process will now be done online to prevent corruption. For colleges, inspections will be fully online. For universities, a hybrid model will be followed most inspections will be remote, but some officials will visit campuses for direct oversight.

Reason for the Change

The decision comes after the CBI arrested officials in a case involving Andhra Pradesh’s Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation (KLEF). It was alleged that the institution bribed NAAC inspectors to get good ratings. NAAC Director Ganesan Kannabiran called this shift to online inspections a "surgical strike" against corruption.

What Happens to Pending Applications?

Currently, 650 institutions are in the process of accreditation. About 50% of them are renewing their grades and can continue with the old system until the new one is ready. New applicants can choose the basic accreditation model under the new system.

The new grading policy is expected by the end of February 2025.
