National Highway Toll Plazas May Go Fully Cashless from April 1

NHAI is mulling stopping cash payments at toll plazas; the government plans to allow only FASTag and UPI-based digital toll transactions to improve efficiency

Feb 21, 2026 – The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) may completely discontinue cash payment at toll plazas on national highways starting from April 1, 2026. Once this policy is implemented, all toll payments will be made only through digital modes such as FASTag or UPI, according to NHAI officials on Thursday (February 19).

Currently, vehicles without a valid and functional FASTag are charged twice the applicable user fee at toll plazas if payment is made in cash. Those who opt to pay via UPI are charged 1.25 times the applicable user fee as per the vehicle category.

The initiative is being planned by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to improve traffic flow and develop a fully digital tolling ecosystem by promotinge cashless transactions. As per the NHAI, the move to cashless payments will ease congestion at toll plazas and make plaza fee services transparent and efficient as  well as enhance "Ease of Commuting".
