Neeraj Chopra Conferred with Rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hails Olympic champion as a symbol of perseverance, patriotism and excellence during South Block ceremony

Udaipur, Oct 23, 2025 - India’s star javelin thrower and two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra was yesterday honoured with the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conferred the rank insignia to Neeraj during during a ceremony held in South Block, New Delhi.

Interacting with Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra and his family members, the Defence Minister described him as an epitome of perseverance, patriotism and the Indian spirit of striving for excellence.

“Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra embodies the highest ideals of discipline, dedication and national pride, serving as an inspiration to generations within the sporting fraternity and the Armed Forces alike,” said Shri Rajnath Singh. Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi and other senior officials of the Indian Army and Territorial Army were present on the occasion.

Neeraj had won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
