The Nehru Garden, located in the middle of Fateh Sagar Lake, is set to undergo changes in its operational model. The state government has rejected the initial financial proposal for managing the garden under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. New proposals will now be invited to ensure higher revenue from the project.
Government's Expectations for Increased Revenue
UDA has submitted the financial proposal to the Urban Development Department last month. The government hopes that a revised proposal will generate more income. The UDA has sought proposals twice, as this model is unique and has a longer operational period.
UDA to Monitor Visitor Management via App
Around 1,250 tourists visit Fateh Sagar daily, with most expected to visit Nehru Garden. If visitor numbers exceed this, the company will pay an additional fee to UDA. An app will be developed for visitor bookings, allowing UDA to monitor the management of the garden effectively.
Entry Fees and Operating Hours
According to the terms, Nehru Garden will operate daily from 9:30 AM for 12 hours. The entry fee is set at Rs 250/-. After sunset, an additional Rs 50/- will be charged, bringing the total to Rs 300. For children, the entry fee will be Rs 175.
The UDA is preparing to operate Nehru Garden under a PPP model with 100% capital investment from the contracted firm. This will be the first such model in the state, where the firm will run the garden as an amusement park. The garden has been closed for repairs for the past one and a half years after being transferred to the UIT in February 2021 due to lack of maintenance.
Future Plans: Theme Park and Luxury Boat Service
Under the PPP model, there are plans to develop a theme park for tourists at Nehru Garden. A separate luxury boat service, powered by solar or battery, will be established for access to the park. The estimated cost for developing the theme park and the boats is around Rs 15 to 20 crore, which will be fully funded by the private company. The company will operate the garden for 20 years, with the first 15 years being mandatory. If the work is satisfactory, the contract may be extended for an additional five years.
