Nepal Army Takes Control as Gen Z Uprising Turns Deadly
Sept 10, 2025 - Nepal’s Army has taken over charge of the country with law and order spiralling out of control these past two days. The agitation by Gen Z, which started as a protest against a social media ban by the authorities, soon turned into a full-blown revolt against the government. The death toll in the violence and police action that ensued has risen to 30 while more than 1,000 people have been injured .
Yesterday, on September 9, tens of thousands of young people stormed government buildings, setting fire to the Parliament House and private residences of Ministers and politicians. Curfew was imposed in most parts of the country but protestors defied it to roam the streets and indulge in sloganeering, arson and chaos.
Currently, negotiations are on between Army and government representatives with the protest leaders after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned.
Some semblance of order has been restored with the Army guarding main areas of the national capital, Kathmandu. The Army has imposed nationwide restrictive order and curfew and warned that it was committed to preserving law and order. It has appealed for the return of weapons that were looted.
Tribhuvan International Airport is said to have resumed operations after being shut down for 24 hours.
