Nepal Ex PM Arrested a Day After Balen Takes Charge
Former Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli arrested along with ex-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak over 2025 Gen Z protest crackdown that caused 76 deaths; big action by new PM Balendra Shah government
March 28, 2026 – Former Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was arrested on Saturday (March 28) just a day after the new Nepal PM Balendra (Balen) Shah took oath of office. Along with him, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has also been taken into custody, marking a major action by the Gen-Z backed new government.
Oli has been arrested on charges of negligence and culpable homicide linked to the 2025 Gen Z protests crackdown which led to around 76 deaths and thousands of injuries in police firing and violent clashes. The violence erupted over social media ban triggering major uprising across the country and subsequently mass political change and elections.
The Balen government was acting on a report of a high-level commission set up to investigate the negligence during the uprising which led to the large number of deaths. The commission had recommended a maximum of 10 years imprisonment for those responsible, including Oli and Lekhak.
Soon after their arrests, the newly-appointed Minister of Home Affairs, Sudan Gurung wrote in a post on X that a "promise is a promise" and that "no one is above the law".
