Justice Khanna will take oath as the 51st CJI on November 11
Udaipur, October 25, 2024 - Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) by the President of India. He will continue in office until May 13, 2025, a little over six months.
Justice Khanna’s name was recommended to the Union Law Ministry by the current CJI DY Chandrachud. Justice Khanna’s appointment will come into effect from November 11, 2024, when he will be sworn in as the 51st CJI.
A Department of Justice notification said: “In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 11, 2024.”
DY Chandrachud is due to retire on November 10. He was appointed the 50th CJI on November 9, 2022.
