“Hospital authority is asking us to get the FIR lodge so that they can start the procedure of postmortem while police is saying that there is no need of any FIR in this case and just by writing an application to the hospital, the work should be done,” said Gauri Shankar Mali, grandfather of baby.

A shocking incident took place at MB Hospital today when a 2 day old baby lost her life due to negligence at the time of vaccination. No satisfactory answer or action has been taken yet by the hospital and police authority, while family members are in state of shock and are trying to find out the reason behind death of their healthy born baby. Newborn Died After Vaccination “Hospital authority is asking us to get the FIR lodge so that they can start the procedure of postmortem while police is saying that there is no need of any FIR in this case and just by writing an application to the hospital, the work should be done,” said Gauri Shankar Mali, grandfather of baby. On September 16, 2011 a baby girl was born to Ritu Mali and according to the hospital record both mother and infant was healthy at the time of delivery. On 18 September 2011 at around 10:30 am when the baby was taken for vaccination to the vaccination centre of MB Hospital, the staff nurses gave the vaccination of BCG and asked the relatives to get the vaccination of Hepatitis-B from medical shop outside the ward. Soon after giving the injection of Hepatitis, the baby cried a bit and become quiet and motionless. The vaccination staff asked relatives to take the baby to Emergency Ward. The relatives rushed to the ward where Dr. Pradeep Meena checked the baby and declared her dead. Appalling relatives when asked the reason of death, Dr. Meena said that the reason can be known only after postmortem. The mother of the infant is still kept unaware of the sad demise of her baby to prevent her from shock. She is admitted in the hospital’s maternity ward. When Dr. D.P Singh was approached he told UT, “We have already instructed Dr. Gopal, In-charge of vaccination centre to seize the batch of medicine given to the infant, just in case, if there is any chance of infectious vaccination.” The relatives gave written application to Dr. Singh to conduct the postmortem as soon as possible but he refused to take the application saying that FIR should be lodged first in order to conduct postmortem. While the Hospital Chowki In-charge,Mubarak Hussain said that in such cases FIR is not necessary and an application from the victim is sufficient to conduct the postmortem, though he also expressed no objection in lodging FIR. Nothing is final yet. Ritu the mother of the departed child is still unaware that her baby is no more in the world while the relatives are upset of horrible situation they have fallen in. Hospital to Police Chowki and then back to hospital, calling acquaintances and friends for help but nothing has worked out yet. Alas! Nothing is new to us, no change is expected and nobody really cares. There is no one to take the responsibility or the blame. Report by Sayeed Ahmed
