Udaipur, March 1, 2025 - Israel and Hamas started discussions in Cairo about the next phase of the ceasefire in Gaza. The first phase is set to end this weekend, but the truce will continue as long as negotiations were ongoing. Hamas has handed over the remains of four Israeli hostages in exchange for the release of over 600 Palestinian detainees held by Israel. Earlier, a 42-day truce led to the release of 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for more than 1,700 Palestinian prisoners.
Officials from Israel, Qatar, Egypt, and the US held talks in Cairo to stop the war in Gaza and secure the release of captives. Hamas was not present but was represented by mediators. No progress was made, and it is unclear when talks will continue.
The war has killed 48,388 people and injured 111,803, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Thousands are still missing under rubble, with the total death toll possibly over 61,000.
Phase Two of the Ceasefire
The next phase of the ceasefire is supposed to last 42 days. It includes the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the release of all 24 remaining living hostages in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners. However, Netanyahu has shown no interest in this plan, as it would mean declaring the war over.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has resisted signing a full ceasefire agreement. An Israeli official confirmed that the military will not withdraw from a key corridor along Gaza’s southern border, despite the truce terms. This decision could create tensions with Hamas and mediator Egypt.
In a separate incident, a car-ramming attack injured nine people in central Israel on Thursday, February 27,2025. Two are in serious condition, and one is critical. Israeli police identified the attacker as a 53-year-old Palestinian man, who was killed.
Israel has intensified its military operations in Palestinian cities in the occupied West Bank. Since the ceasefire began last month, dozens have been killed, and tens of thousands have been displaced.
