Nitish Kumar has resigned as Bihar Chief Minister after 21 years in office; BJP leader Samrat Choudhary is set to become the next CM as political transition unfolds in Bihar

April 14, 2026 - Nitish Kumar has resigned from his post as Bihar Chief Minister. He submitted his resignation to the Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain at Lok Bhawan in Patna today afternoon bringing an end to an illustrious reign as head of the Bihar government for the last 21 years.

Earlier, Kumar held his last-ever State Cabinet meeting following which he dissolved the Council of Ministers before giving in his resignation.

After having held the post of Bihar CM from 2005 to 2026, Kumar is now all set to assume his new role as a Rajya Sabha member. The State is also ready for a new face as its Chief Minister which, as was expected, will be from the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) - for the first time ever in Bihar.

Samrat Choudhary, deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and one of the leading contenders for the CM post, was elected leader of the BJP Legislative Party of the State in a meeting this afternoon at its party headquarters in the State capital. He is expected to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar tomorrow, April 15. He will be meeting the Governor shortly and will stake claim to form the next government.
