High Court: No Construction or Soil Dumping in Fateh Sagar
High Court was hearing a PIL filed against State Government, Department of Autonomous Governance, District Collector, Udaipur Nagar Nigam and UDA
Udaipur, Nov 13, 2025 - Rajasthan High Court has once again taken a strict stand regarding the protection of Fateh Sagar directing that no construction or soil dumping is allowed in the catchment area of the lake, whether on private or government land.
The Bench, comprising of Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Justice Anurup Sindhi, issued this order during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by petitioner Mangilal Joshi against the State Government, Department of Autonomous Governance, District Collector, Udaipur Nagar Nigam and Udaipur Development Authority (UDA).
The judges further said that if any soil has already been dumped, the UDA must either have it removed or do so on its own and submit a report to the Court.
The petitioner alleged that soil was being dumped in the submerged area of Fateh Sagar to level the land, and various constructions were ongoing, despite the High Court having previously prohibited human activity in this area. Originally, the water retention area of the lake was 4.5 square kms, which has now shrunk to 2.89 square kms.
Earlier too the High Court had made strong objections to any such activities and said that if such activities continue in the submerged area of Fateh Sagar, the world-famous lake could lose its existence, which would harm Udaipur’s beauty, tourism and ecological balance.
