Delhi Environment Ministry clamps down on old vehicles to curb growing pollution in the national capital
March 3, 2025 - In Delhi, vehicles that are 15 years old will not be allowed to receive petrol or diesel after March 31, 2025. The Delhi government has taken this decision following a meeting with Environment Ministry officials to introduce measures to curb the growing pollution in the national capital.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on March 1 that a special team will be formed to inspect vehicles that are 15 years or older. He added that the government will install gadgets at all fuel pumps which will identify vehicles which are 15 years plus. The Union Ministry of Petroleum would be informed about the gadget installation.
The government will introduce special task force to ensure rules and check vehicle compliance. The Minister also mentioned that to control pollution, the installation of anti-smog guns will be made mandatory at hotels, airports, large complexes and construction sites.
"This team will oversee strict implementation starting April 1. Additionally, we will intensify scrutiny of heavy vehicles entering Delhi to ensure they meet prescribed environmental standards before being allowed entry," Sirsa said.
In 2021, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) had issued an order under which diesel vehicles more than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years were not allowed on the roads. This order had also directed that such vehicles found on the roads after January 1, 2022, would be impounded and sent to the scrapyard.
