“Pornography, particularly Child Pornography, is a “serious offence” and measures are being taken to curb it.  Government has taken various steps to check the spread of fake news, pornographic content and anti-national content on social media platforms,” Ravi Shankar Prasad, Electronics and Information Technology Minister.

An official release of the government of India mentioned that the government is taking several steps to curb the spread of fake news and pornography through social media.  It added that there is no proposal to link social media profiles of users with their Aadhaar Card numbers.

Talking about the spreading influence of fake news, pornography, specially child pornography and revenge porn, the Minister called it a serious menace and announced that the government is incorporating measures to curtail this menace.

In response to a question on whether the government proposes to formulate any policy to link social media profile of users to their Aadhaar numbers, Ravi Shankar confirmed that there is no such proposal with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Adding that since India is a democracy, it should not be compared with China or the Middle East, when it comes to reviewing blocking certain sites that spread pornography or fake news.  He also said that with the police investigations on the Jamia shooting still on, currently the government is not looking at talking to Facebook whose platform was used to live stream the incident.
