Udaipur, March 4, 2025 - The Delhi High Court has ruled that a complete ban on smartphones in schools is not practical. Instead, their use should be monitored and regulated. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued guidelines to balance the benefits and risks of smartphones for students. Schools must educate students on responsible online behavior and digital manners. The court has directed the CBSE, Delhi government’s Directorate of Education, and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan to review and update smartphone policies in schools.
The court warned that too much screen time and social media use could lead to anxiety, shorter attention spans, and cyberbullying. The court acknowledged that smartphones help parents and children stay connected. However, their use for entertainment or recreation in school should be prohibited.
Schools should make arrangements for students to deposit phones upon arrival and collect them at the end of the day.
Smartphones should not disrupt classes or school discipline.
Cameras and recording features should be restricted in school premises and buses.
Violations could result in confiscation of phones or a temporary ban on carrying them. Schools should create a fair policy with input from parents, teachers, and experts.
