April 13, 2026 - A large-scale protest by factory workers demanding salary hike and other benefits turned violent in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida (Phase-2 industrial area) on Monday (April 13) with reports of vehicles being torched, vandalism and stone pelting incidents.  Heavy police forces have been deployed to control the unrest which has paralysed traffic across Noida and nearby areas with commuters stranded for hours during peak time. Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath has issued orders to deal with anti-social elements strictly.

The agitation, which has been ongoing for the past few days and involves multiple factories across Noida’s industrial belt, turned violent today after demonstrators clashed with security personnel. A female worker was injured in firing and clashes, escalating tensions.

Workers in Noida are demanding wage parity with the neighbouring Haryana which recently saw a hike of almost 35% in monthly wages - jumping from Rs 14,000 to Rs 19,000. The long-standing grievances of the workers include long working hours (up to 12 hours a day) and low monthly pay of around Rs 13,000 in some cases.

The protests have continued despite an assurance from District Magistrate Medha Roopam that workers’ concerns will be addressed after a high-level meeting with senior Labour officials on Sunday (April 12). Post the meeting the government announced timely salaries (by 10th of each month), double overtime pay, mandatory weekly offs plus medical and safety provisions among other perks. CM Adityanath has said industries should adhere to the labour laws and give workers their dues.

Workers involved in the protests are from Motherson Group, garment/hosiery factories (Phase-2 industrial area), auto component units and cable/engineering factories (including nearby Rajasthan/Bhiwadi units).

The agitation had first broken out at the Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India plant in IMT Manesar on April 3 and gradually spread across Delhi-NCR including Noida and Faridabad.
