Oil Minister Quashes 'Nationwide Lockdown' Rumours

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri dismisses nationwide lockdown rumours, assures uninterrupted fuel and essential supplies as government monitors global situation

March 27, 2026 - Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has denied that the government plans a nationwide lockdown and dismissed these reports as rumours. Speculations of a lockdown had been triggered after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his recent speech in the Parliament, had called on the people to be “prepared and united, just as they had stood together during the COVID-19 pandemic”.

The Petroleum Minister on Thursday (March 26) quashed these reports saying there was “no such proposal” under consideration by the Centre which was closely monitoring global developments in energy, supply chains and essential commodities. He urged citizens to maintain calm and assured of uninterrupted availability of fuel and critical supplies. 

Writing on X, Puri said, "The global situation remains in flux, and we are closely monitoring developments across energy, supply chains and essential commodities on a real-time basis."

“We are fully prepared to handle emerging challenges,” he wrote.
