FSSAI's move ensures stricter quality checks for safer and more reliable consumer products
December 4,2024 - India’s food safety body, FSSAI, has labeled packaged drinking water and mineral water as ‘high-risk food.’ This doesn’t mean the water is unsafe it just means stricter checks will now ensure it is always safe and of high quality.
What Will Change?
Companies making packaged water must pass inspections before getting a license. They will face regular safety audits every year.
Earlier, companies needed two approvals: one from FSSAI and one from BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards.) The government has removed the BIS requirement to make things simpler for businesses.
What Are High-Risk Foods?
“High-risk foods” are items that need close monitoring because they are sensitive and can spoil easily. Other examples include:
Milk and dairy products
Meat and fish
Eggs
Indian sweets
Special foods for nutrition
These foods are checked often by food safety officers to keep them safe for people.
Why Did FSSAI Make This Change?
The FSSAI wants to protect consumers by making sure companies follow strict safety rules. This way, people can trust the quality of food and drinks they buy.
