Udaipur, Nov 6, 2025 - Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) card will be deactivated from January 1, 2026, if it is not linked with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made this compulsory in order to promote accountability in tax filing. Linking the two is mandatory otherwise many important transactions will be affected such as salary credit, SIPs, tax refunds, pensions plus other government financial benefits.

You can check your PAN-Aadhaar link status online from the Income Tax (IT) department’s official website where you will also find the option to link both documents.

How to link PAN and Aaadhaar

  • Visit the IT department e-filing website
  • Click on Link Aadhaar in Quick Links section
  • Enter PAN and Aadhaar number
  • Click on Validate
  • The link request will be forwarded to the UIDAI for validation
  • You may be asked to give phone number for validation via OTP; verify with OTP
  • It may take 4-5 days to process the link request
  • Check status under Quick Links → Link Aadhaar Status

If PAN was already inoperative, you will need to pay the Rs 1,000 fee first.

The CBDT has mandated the linking for all individuals issued a PAN as of July 1, 2017. December 31, 2025, will be the last date for linking for all those who received their PAN card on or before October 1, 2025.

Those who applied for a new PAN card after July 1, 2025, are required to have an authenticated Aadhaar card for the verification of their PAN applications. For new applicants, this linking will be done automatically during the application stage.
