In October 2019, a food inspector visited a sweetmeat shop in Berinag, Pithoragarh after receiving complains of a packed Patanjali Soan Papdi product. The packets were seized and sent for testing and found wanting in the basic quality test.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Pithoragarh, has pronounced a 6 month jail term for an Assistant Manager of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd and 2 other persons in this connection and also fined all three. Sentences and fines of Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000 to Pathak, Joshi and Kumar respectively.
The court's decision stemmed from violations under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, "The evidence presented in Court clearly demonstrate the substandard quality of the product", the Court said.
On receiving the complain against Patanjali Navratna Elaichi Saun Papdi in October 2019, the food safety inspector collected samples and forensic tests were conducted at the state food and drug lab in Rudrapur in May 2020. The food safety department received the report in December 2020 and cases were filed against businessmen Lila Dhar Pathak, distributor Ajay Joshi and Patanjali Assistant Manager Abhishek Kumar.
