Parliament Torched as Protests Escalate in Kathmandu

Gen Z leads mass protests against social media ban, nepotism; private homes of President and PM allegedly set ablaze

Sept 9, 2025 - Anti-government protests in Nepal, into its second day, have escalated with protestors setting fire to the country’s Parliament building today, September 9. Breaking the curfew, people entered the Parliament, smashed all windows and started fires while spray painting graffiti and slogans on the walls.

Anti-government protests have rocked the capital city of Kathmandu since yesterday, September 8. The anger erupted after several social media networks, including Facebook, X and YouTube, were blocked in the country last week after failing to comply with a new requirement to register and submit to government oversight.

Gen Z demonstrators, protesting the ban on social media and angry about what they called undue advantage given to “nepo kids”, turned violent yesterday after the police opened fire on thousands gathered around the Parliament. 19 people were reported to have been killed in the firing and more than 400 injured in the clash with law enforcement authorities.

Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli resigned today, a day after the protests began, and the ban on social media was also lifted. Announcing his decision, the Prime Minister said he resigned “to facilitate solution to the problem, and help resolve it politically.”

However, this has not deterred the protestors who remained on the streets till late at night, creating road blocks and storming government buildings and setting them on fire. Private residences of President Ram Chandra Poudel, PM Oli and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak were reportedly set on fire.

President Paudel today called on all parties to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to resolve the ongoing crisis.

A curfew has been imposed in several parts of the country including Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, India has issued an advisory to its citizens in Nepal asking them to “exercise caution and adhere to the steps and guidelines issued by the Nepali authorities.” All flights at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu have been cancelled. IndiGo and Air India have suspended all flights to and from Kathmandu.
