Sept 1, 2026 - India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth data in the first quarter of FY 2026-27 was released on August 31. At 7.8%, the data has surpassed the Reserve Bank of India’s 7% estimate and shows a sustained expansion in India's economy in the April-June quarter. The figure may be slower than the 8.6% expansion which was recorded in the previous Quarter but is higher than 6.9% growth recorded in Q1 of 2025-26.

At 7.8%, the GDP data has surpassed industry expectations particularly because of weak global cues and concerns that the West Asia war could have a deep negative impact on the country’s economic scenario.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has termed India’s 7.8% GDP growth a “herculean feat” and said the achievement reflects the collective strength and resilience of the people of India, despite oil price shocks, supply chain disruptions and global uncertainties.

PM Modi posted on X: “India’s exemplary GDP growth of 7.8% during Q1 of FY 2026-27 is a herculean feat…. Doomsayers were doomed and India bloomed…yet again!”
