April 20, 2026 – Northern Japan was struck by a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.4 on Monday (April 20) triggering tsunami warnings. The earthquake struck at a depth of 10km, 100km off Japan's eastern coast at 4:53 pm local time (0753 GMT) in the Pacific Ocean.

The weather office immediately issued emergency alert for tsunami waves of up to 3 metres (10 feet) height. Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate have had their Pacific coasts put under tsunami warning and people were told to evacuate immediately. "Evacuate immediately from coastal regions and riverside areas to a safer place such as high ground or an evacuation building,” the warning said advising people to stay away from coasts and river mouths that could overflow.

The earthquake was so powerful that several high-rise buildings in Tokyo, which is several hundred kilometres from the epicenter, reportedly shook. Emergency services have been put on an alert as the weather office warned that tsunami waves were already approaching coastal areas and that “Tsunami waves are expected to hit repeatedly. Do not leave safe ground until the warning is lifted”.
