At least 30 people were injured in the tremors that struck northern Japan late Monday; alert for potential megaquake

Dec 9, 2025 - A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 rocked northern Japan late on Monday (December 8) leaving several injured and forcing thousands to rush out of their homes. According to initial reports, at least 30 people have been injured. A tsunami warning was triggered and government ordered 90,000 residents to evacuate. However, the tsunami alert was later withdrawn by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) but caution for high waves remained as waves measuring 70-50-40 centimetres were observed.

The JMA said there are chances of a potential megaquake - similar or stronger tremors - in the coming days and has urged residents to remain on high alert for at least a week. Authorities have issued caution warning to those living along the Pacific coast to stay vigilant throughout the coming week and be prepared for immediate evacuation if required.

The earthquake struck at 14:15 GMT at a depth of 50 km and about 80 km off the coast of Aomori. At least 10 aftershocks of magnitude of at least 1.5 were recorded in the region in less than 24 hours.

There have yet been no reports of major infrastructure damage, however.
